Fused Silica Capillary Columns Coated with Modified Carbograph

In the last few years, at the University of Studies of Urbino, two new types of fused silica capillary column have been developed. The interior of this column is  coated with a layer of graphitized carbon (Carbograph 1) treated with opportune stationary phase. This column combines high efficiency in terms of the elevated number of theoretical plates with the selectivity of the graphitized carbon chromatographic column itself.

The theoretical principles and the characteristics of utilization of this new type of columns are extensively described in several publications.

These columns are particularly suitable, amongst other applications, for environmental analysis of trace elements. LARA is able to produce and commercialize this new type of highly efficient and selective columns in standard lengths of approx. 25 meters and in three different diameters: 0.53 mm and 0.25 mm and 0.32 mm. The first type have a larger loading capacity, and more importantly they can be immediately connected to gas chromatographs for packed columns.

The following applications give an idea of the efficiency and selectivity of this column.
For example, Picture 1 illustrates the separation of crude oil components with particular reference to the separation of pristane and phyatne from their linear homologues. The retention times of these compounds are reduced almost by 50% compared to those obtained with a normal gas-liquid capillary column in optimal working conditions.
